Listenable Records (2012)
A left field departure for French label Listenable, signing on an act very retro rock oriented such as the Australian group My Dynamite. It’s immediate with catchy songs and soulful, bluesy laced melodies that material such as “Take It Or Leave It” and “Dirty Game” lives for the youthful glory days of the Black Crowes, the Rolling Stones, and possibly Humble Pie. Forming in 2008, the five-piece just have this air of good time confidence in their delivery, almost as if you would stop and stare upon hearing this material for the first time.
Often the guitar hook starts the groove madness with My Dynamite - such as the AC/DC meets older southern rock swagger for “Watch Yourself Grow”- but soon the Pat Carmody melodies soothe your headspace like a tall glass of your finest alcoholic beverage. Drummer Simon Aarons also doubles as a studio engineer for other acts in Australia, and this benefits the band’s lean and mean sound- it’s very direct and leaps from the studio speakers with almost kinetic electricity. These guys aren’t going to change the world with their songwriting- they keep the emphasis on tight 3-5 minute tracks, capturing your attention with rhythms and hooks that you’ll shake to 24 hours a day.
Eventually the old guard seeps into younger musicians’ palates. In order for rock or metal to survive, the basics of gearing things back to the human element must occur, or humanity will become victim to the modern technology it invented. On their self-titled, 10 song debut, My Dynamite deliver a heartfelt retro rock platter, one that those who huddled around rock radio in their youth will rally around. Break out your bandanas, overflowing denim jeans and transport yourselves back to 1974.
