Nordic Records (2012)
Raise your hand if you are mighty impressed by the name Bulk. Didn’t think so… These Norwegians play what they call genuine and loud bulldozermetal, more specific a mix of stoner and aggressive Pantera style metal. The band started playing together in 2004, come 2010, off to USA to record the debut album with producer Sylvia Massy, known to some from bands like Tool and System Of A Down. The lady was very impressed by Bulk’s demo material, ending up in charging absolutely nothing for the job. Not bad.
On to the debut itself. "Guardian" is filled with energy and aggressive metal, and I can hear inspiration from various bands like already mentioned Pantera, to bands like Mastodon, In Flames and one or two grunge bands. But there is something missing. Catchy songs that you would like to hear over and over again. There is simply nothing here which makes me want to press play again when the last song fades out. What’s not missing is the
annoying “I’m so mad I have to scream” vocals….But apart from that, the ability is there, the energy is there,it’s almost all there. But that’s not enough. Maybe next time.
